'Folia' is a traditional music of Europe which is of Iberian origin.
As three beat saraband, the person who established its melody and harmony is said to be the French composer Jean-Baptiste Lully.
It has been used by many composers such as Corelli, Scarlatti, Vivaldi, Bach, Handel and Rachmaninov in their works.
Marin Marais also used it as the theme for the 31 variations for viole and basso continuo, which has been performed with many kind of instruments.
Originally this was arranged for the sax quartet led by Masato Kumoi.
For this publication, I revised this widely, including its tonality. Although the original music consists of simple melody and basso continuo, I poured every possible various saxophone's technics into the 31 variations. You can perform just several selected variations of your favorite, or the entire variations. (Tohru Aki)
